A meeting to discuss a potential media-led community based programme to defend the local coastline from erosion and tackle climate change by introducing vegetation to stabilise the coastal landscape and help to correct rainfall patterns..

New Zealand, with coastal erosion, terrain and climate similar to ours, reports that it has successfully created natural, living sea defences by encouraging community planting of coastal woodland and vegetation that has dramatically reduced coastal erosion and maintenance costs to sustainable levels.

A local pilot demonstration is proposed for East Anglia in parallel with a study including assessments of:

• applicability to the UK of the New Zealand Government methods and guidelines
• impact of the pilot on local climate, potentially benefiting reservoirs and farmland
• the track record of community volunteer engagement by original Pocket Full of Acorns programme launched in the UK West Country, which successfully invited people to grow trees at home and plant them in allocated sites once permission is granted
• data on sediment flow around the British coastline
• impact of alternative coastal strategies on: Urgent human factors | Tourism | Flooding | Agriculture and national food security | Existing and new Wildlife Habitats | Prolonged Drought | Flash Floods
